Research brief: A newsletter platform for solo writers who want to earn from paid subscriptions

One idea, solo writers as the customer, 11 products. Eight came from the register; research added beehiiv, Ghost and Kit.

What we found
Paid newsletters for solo writers are held by large platforms whose cut runs from 10% (Substack) to 0% (beehiiv, Ghost). None of the six small register launches advertises paid subscriptions today; the one that did, Papyrus, left the market by 2022.
Why it matters
A new platform can't win on take rate: 0% already exists. The small entrants still running appear to have survived by narrowing to a writing workflow (Notion, WordPress, the inbox), not by competing on paid subscriptions.
Still uncertain
Two lineage links (Papyrus to Paragraph, Blogstatic to Blogmaker) are inferred, not announced, and beehiiv's figures come from a capture four days old.
Do next
Decide what writers would pay for that beehiiv and Ghost don't offer, and test it with writers who already earn from subscriptions before picking a fee model.

The findings in detail

  • beehiiv (from $49 a month billed yearly, per a 26 October capture) and Ghost (from $29 a month billed yearly) charge a flat plan and take 0% of subscription revenue. Substack is free to start but keeps 10%; Kit's free plan charges 3.5% + 30c per transaction, card fees included.
  • Of the six small register launches, none of the sites checked today advertises built-in paid subscriptions. The one that did, Papyrus (a 5% fee in 2021), had relaunched as a web3 platform by April 2022 and now redirects to Paragraph, which sells an AI content agent to companies.
  • The register entries still answering appear to have narrowed to a writing workflow (Notion, WordPress, the inbox) and charge by contacts, sends or a flat plan, not a share of revenue.
  • Others changed hands or shape: Twitter bought Posterous and closed it in 2013, Newsletter Glue was sold in April 2025, Blogstatic appears to have become Blogmaker, and IndiePaper's domain appears to have lapsed after 2022.

What remains unknown

  • Whether Papyrus and Paragraph are the same company; inferred from the redirect and an image bucket named 'papyrus_images', with no announcement. Blogstatic becoming Blogmaker is likewise unannounced.
  • beehiiv's price and fee come from an Internet Archive capture of 26 October 2026; the live site blocked automated checks.
  • That Notocat, Weightless and Blogmaker lack paid subscriptions is judged from their public pages only, not from inside the products.
  • What happened to IndiePaper as a product; only its domain's history is documented.

What to find out next

  • Choose the fee model before building. Writers can already keep 100% of subscription revenue (minus Stripe fees) on beehiiv Lite or Ghost Publisher, so a percentage cut has to be justified by something other than price.
  • Interview solo writers who already charge readers on Substack, beehiiv, Ghost or Kit about what would make them move a paying list.
  • If you take a workflow wedge (Notion, WordPress, the inbox), check whether its users want paid subscriptions at all; none of the register's wedge products advertises them.
