Research brief: An AI notetaker that joins video calls and writes up meeting notes, for small sales teams

Scope agreed: one idea, small sales teams as the customer, 8 products (the limit is 10). All eight happen to be in the register; a paid brief also adds close products the search missed.

What we found

  • Six of the eight still sell a notetaker, and all six give a free plan or trial. The cheapest paid seats run from $8.33 (Otter, annual) to $20 (Sembly Pro) per user a month. A newcomer can't win on price or on having a free tier.
  • Recording without a bot is standard now. Fathom, Circleback, Otter, MeetGeek and tl;dv all offer it, so "no bot" no longer sets anyone apart.
  • Sales follow-up is the crowded spot. tl;dv sells CRM updates and follow-ups and MeetGeek sells agents that act in other apps after the call. Spoke led with automatic CRM sync for sales leaders and has since turned into a developer API; Airgram, which also sold to sales teams, was folded into Notta in 2024.
  • The bigger players are moving up-market. MeetGeek describes itself as for mid-market and enterprise teams, and Sembly as for professional, client-facing teams. Of the eight, Otter Pro ("individuals and small teams") and Fathom Team (2-user minimum) address small teams directly.

Who each sells to, and how it records

Fathom
Individuals and teams of any size; lists sales first among use cases, and offers its Business plan free to teams switching from Gong-type tools.Records: A bot, or no bot (bot-free capture is a Mac beta).
Circleback
No target customer stated. Testimonials are from founders, sales teams and consultants.Records: A bot, or a desktop app for Mac and Windows that records without one; mobile apps for in-person meetings.
tl;dv
"Sales, customer success, and internal meetings"; has a section on coaching sales teams.Records: Says "no bot required"; how it records without one isn't stated on the homepage.
Otter.ai
Pro is "for individuals and small teams"; sales is one of its listed use cases.Records: A bot that joins Zoom, Teams and Meet, or a desktop app that records without one.
Sembly AI
"Professional teams" and "client-facing teams".Records: Joins scheduled Zoom, Meet, Teams and Webex meetings; mobile app for in-person.
MeetGeek
"Mid-market and enterprise teams"; sales among listed roles.Records: Bot, Chrome extension, desktop recorder, mobile or upload.
Airgram
In 2024 it listed solutions for teams, sales, product and customer success.Records: Auto-joined Zoom, Meet and Teams calls (2024 archive).
Spoke
Was: sales leaders and other teams (2024 archive). Now: developers.Records: Meeting bots for Zoom, Meet and Teams, now sold as infrastructure.Note: The register shows this site as answering, which is true and misleading: the domain is alive, the product it launched is not. Only a manual check catches this.

What remains unknown

  • Why Airgram joined Notta and why Spoke stopped selling its notetaker. Neither published a reason we could find; both are worth asking their founders about.
  • Who acquired Fathom, if anyone: YC's directory says acquired while the product is still sold under its own name.
  • Revenue, customer counts and churn for any of them. None of it is public here, and launch votes or YC team size are not a stand-in.
  • How much small sales teams use the free plans and never pay. Every operating product offers one, which suggests the free tier is the fight.

What to find out next

  • Talk to five small sales teams that use Fathom's or Otter's free plan: what would make them pay for a second tool, if anything?
  • Ask the Spoke founders why they moved from a sales notetaker to selling meeting bots to developers. Their answer is the most direct evidence on this exact idea.
  • If you still build, pick a narrower segment the eight don't target (for example in-person or phone sales) and test demand there before the video-call product.

What this adds over the free brief

The free brief compares launches you pick from the register using what the register holds: status, evidence and dates. This one adds the products the search didn't surface, current pricing and customers from each company's own pages, and what changed since launch. Spoke is the example: the register shows its site answering, which is true, but the product it launched is no longer sold.

One-off payment. A first pass the moment you pay, the checked brief within 48 hours. Full refund if it's late.
