We said BUILD on August 12, 2026. Not settled — due August 12, 2027.
Read this with the caveat. We tested the engine that produced this verdict against 292 launches whose outcomes we already knew, and could not show it predicted which survived. Some of its data sources were also dead at the time of scoring. The verdict stays up, dated and unedited, because a record you can quietly revise is not a record — but it is worth less than it looked when it was written.
Demand is genuine and multi-channel — real Reddit interest, growing search, and paying competitors prove the category. Winnability is moderate: incumbents are beatable indies and clear wedges exist, but SMS parsing is a fragile, high-maintenance engineering surface and monetization in this consumer category is historically thin. This is a legitimate BUILD candidate if narrowed to one region (India/UPI) and one platform first.
Multiple channels agree: three Reddit posts with real traction (301, 135, 41 upvotes), a growing search trend with a strong commercial keyword, and four existing competitors charging for or building this exact category.
Incumbents are all small/indie with clear weaknesses (single-platform, weak marketing, unclear privacy) and multiple concrete wedges exist, but SMS parsing across banks/regions and cross-platform local processing is real engineering, and no network-effect moat protects any incumbent.
Expense trackers are a graveyard of abandoned side projects — users habitually download them, use them for a week, and churn, and the ones that stick (Monetal since 2017) survive on tiny revenue. SMS parsing is a maintenance treadmill (every bank changes formats, Android tightens SMS permissions, iOS blocks SMS access entirely), so the 'cross-platform local' wedge is partly closed by the OS itself, meaning heavy ongoing work for a category with weak willingness to pay.
What is worth more than this page. The register records what became of 6,266 real launches. No engine has to be right for that to be true.
