We said MAYBE on September 17, 2026. Not settled — due September 17, 2027.
Read this with the caveat. We tested the engine that produced this verdict against 292 launches whose outcomes we already knew, and could not show it predicted which survived. Some of its data sources were also dead at the time of scoring. The verdict stays up, dated and unedited, because a record you can quietly revise is not a record — but it is worth less than it looked when it was written.
Demand here is real but educational: big threads about learning query optimization, informational keywords, and zero evidence of anyone currently paying for an AI-first optimizer. The gap is genuine and a solo builder can technically ship a wedge (editor plugin, multi-engine plan analysis, cost-not-just-speed), but with no observed paying competitors the monetization risk is the dominant unknown. Treat this as a narrow, validate-before-building opportunity, not a proven market.
There is clear, persistent interest in query optimization as a *skill* (large Reddit threads, informational autocomplete terms), but almost no evidence of people shopping for or paying for a tool — the listed 'competitors' (Supabase, IBM) are not query-optimizer products, so commercial demand is inferred rather than observed.
A concrete wedge exists — an AI-first, multi-database, freemium optimizer / IDE plugin against a general-purpose host and a slow enterprise vendor — and the buyer (backend devs, DBAs) is reachable via Reddit/HN organically. The offset is engineering and trust depth: credible optimization requires EXPLAIN plan parsing per engine, index advisory correctness, and access to production schemas, which is a hard first sale for an unknown solo builder.
The axes suggest a cautious build, but the honest bear case is that this niche is dominated by knowledge, not tooling: people upvote 'top optimization tips' because they want to learn, and the engineers who actually need this already have EXPLAIN ANALYZE, pg_stat_statements, and now ChatGPT for free. A solo founder also faces the worst possible trust barrier — asking a stranger to point an AI at their production database schema and slow-query log — which kills freemium conversion long before the tech does.
What is worth more than this page. The register records what became of 14,962 real launches. No engine has to be right for that to be true.
